Weight Management:
That
"potbelly" or "spare tires" are not only
unsightly, but also represent a real threat to one's health.
Increased fat around the waist or abdominal area so called
"central fat" are long known to increase the risk of
arteriosclerosis, heart disease, type II diabetes, high blood
pressure, morbidity and early death. More than half of adult
Americans are now considered over weight. As the national face
stuffing promotion and contest continues on many television networks
with more and more cooking shows and fast food advertisements, more
teenagers and younger children are fatter than ever. Much of the
blame for this can be placed on lack of exercise and too much time
spent watching TV.
Millions of dollars
and lots of energy are spent by Americans via numerous weight
reduction programs currently known and advertised, liposuctions and
yet we are not getting anywhere and continue to add poundage. For
those who manage to diet off the pounds, mostly gain it back plus
more some time later.
We believe the
solution to the majority of obesities and its morbidity does not lie
only in diet and exercise or even a modest life style modification,
but rather in a fundamental understanding of optimal health,
hormonal balance, prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of
diseases.
How do we do it?
The essential
ingredient in our success to address obesity (like any other health
issue) is that we put our effort in knowing the person first, before
attempting to recommend any remedies. Following are the highlights
of what you should expect.
Complete personal
and family history of patient (recent and the past). Thorough
evaluation of daily activity, diet, habits, exercise. Thorough
physical examination and biological health evaluation. Complete
laboratory Health Screen . Hormonal balance and health
assessment. Oxidation and nutrient status assessment
We then customize
for each and every one of our patients a personal counseling and
medical regimen that may or may not include supplementation of
hormones, herbs, anti-oxidants, nutrients or medications.
Growth Hormone and
Obesity:
For older men,
trying to lose that central fat and potbelly is like swimming across
the Atlantic, this is where growth hormone replacement shines. It is
like hormonal liposuction sucking out the resilient fat. It now
appears that growth hormone may play a major role in control of body
fat. Central body fat appears to a big player in causing insulin
resistance and persistent hyperglycemia in type II diabetics. By
getting rid of the central fat, growth hormone improves insulin
sensitivity and allows the body to get rid of blood sugar and body
fat more efficiently. By increasing the free fatty acids, growth
hormone makes the fat available for energy production at the same
time building muscle mass. The body building action of growth
hormone has long been shown by the body builders, athletes, growth
hormone deficient adults and elderly. As helpful as growth hormones
may be, we recommend their use prescribed only by trained
physicians.
Thyroid Hormone and
Obesity:
We frequently
encounter in our practice patients who are suffering from overt or
sub-clinical hypothyroidism who have been treated for their obesity
by other measures without success. A proper hormonal assessment of
an obese patient will eliminate such evitable failures in treatment.
Appetite
Suppressant and Obesity:
This class of
medication have been in the market for years and played a major role
in assisting patients in taking off the extra poundage. Despite the
periodic publicity of their side effects, short term adjunct use of
them in management of exogenous obesity prescribed and monitor by a
qualified physician remains relatively safe. Occasionally, for the
ideal candidate we have used fat blockers.
Addressing obesity
and the wealth of information currently available about origin,
genetic, metabolic, hormonal, dietary cause of obesity can not be
fairly covered under any single book or websites or a seminar.
Therefore, we highly recommend that you take your questions and
issues and treatment of your obesity to a qualified physician
specializing in medical treatment of obesity, before undertaking a
regimen or surgical and cosmetic approach.
